BS/CH830-05 Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on Romans 7
從歷史與當代視角探討羅馬書第七章
Course Description
This course will present the text of Romans 7 as the basis for the lectures. The text will be translated, and attention will be given to textual matters. The student should then be able to give their own independent exegesis and exposition of the passage. As the lectures interact with the text of Scripture, various perspectives, or voices from the past, such as Origen, Augustine, Calvin, Arminius, Lloyd-Jones and others, will be brought to bear on the interpretive issues that arise from a consideration of Romans 7. Once the voices from the past have been heard, consideration will be given to contemporary New Testament scholarship in addressing the interpretive issues regarding Romans 7. Various interpretive issues include the place of Romans 7 in the context of the Book of Romans, its wider canonical context, Paul’s use of the marriage metaphor, the various uses of the law, the identification of the “I”, and the spirit/flesh distinction. Attention will also be given to the relation of Romans 7 to systematic theology, most notably soteriology, anthropology, Christology, and eschatology. Integrated throughout these intellectual exercises are prayer and meditation, evidencing dependence on the Holy Spirit throughout the process of exegesis, interpretation, and listening to the voices from the past and wrestling with contemporary scholarship.
